I had several good responses on my question regarding large DLT tape
storage units. One person said he got a pair of lockable cabinets from
his DEC VAR (who that was and how much that cost, he didn't say).
Another person (Tom Webster <webster_at_ssdpdc.lgb.cal.boeing.com>) had the
following to say:
--------
We use Engineered Data Product's shelves (
http://www.edp-usa.com/), the
EDP Multi-Media Rack is modular and you can build to taste. If you go
with
a single-hight rack (about 3') and stock it with TKxx storage modules,
it
will hold 100 tapes per side. We went with 2-high (a single-sided base
and an extension, so we could put them up against a wall) so we have 200
tapes in each rack. Just remember that you need to buy the rack and the
media inserts as seperate line items. The nice part is that if you
need 4mm/8mm/CDROM storage as well, you can mix and match inserts.
I'm not sure if EDP sell directly, we purchased ours through Global
Computer
Supplies [
http://www.globalcomputer.com -- rlm], but they seem to be
having web trouble tonight.
----------
The Global website did indeed have a few EDP items, but what I saw was
frankly ridiculously expensive -- $650 to $850 apiece. (I don't warrant
that I saw everything they carried or was able to discern whether it
would help us by the pictures in the catalog, but this was what I saw
that looked like it would fit our needs.) Finally, I did a little
research on my own, and found Page Concepts (
http://www.pagec.com),
which resells EDP's racks themselves. I spoke with a John Pippin
(john.pippin_at_pagec.com), who told me that they sell what we want for
about $150 or so, with a one-calendar-month lead time for manufacturing.
Apparently, EDP sells everything on an as-ordered basis.
Many thanks to everyone who replied!
