SUMMARY:How to configure virtual IPs?

I described a scenario where a 4100 running DU4.0d supports 40+ webservers
(Apache) connected to virtual IPs on one network port. We set them up with
statements of the form:
-> /sbin/ifconfig tu0 inet hosta.domain.org alias
-> /sbin/arp -s aa.bb.cc.dd 11:22:33:44:55 pub
and I was wondering if this should be done in rc.config. I only got two
responses. I will append them here. It appears that putting these entries
in rc.config is not widely done - from the lack of responses it seems that
having many virtual ips on one ethernet interface on an alpha is also not
widely done? I probably will not change the way we do things, unless I hear
from others.

Thanks to those who responded:
dejan_at_yunix.co.yu - "No, I don't think you should put i/f alias commands in the
/etc/rc.config. However, there's /etc/inet.local which may be used for
this purpose. This is the script which is run just after all the i/f
are configured, up and running."

<kazuro.furukawa_at_kek.jp - "Several people suggested in the past that
rc.config may be used to define IP aliases. Be careful. If you
use DECsafe/TruCluster, don't do that.

/var/ase/sbin/nfs_ifconfig, which is called during server restart,
will fail with such rc.config. And all the ASE configuration
information will be lost. You may lose all data on the disks if
you mis-behave after that. "
