Splitting large /etc/group entries on DU 4.0D

Greetings,

I have a Alpha 2100 running DU 4.0D and am having problems with something
splitting large /etc/group entries into multiple lines. This is causing
failures with some of the locally installed SW (samba for instance) because
they don't know to look for multiple instances of the same group name.

Is there any way to turn this "feature" off?
