I received three answers (by Paul A Belcher, Arrigo Triulzi, John Becker). The
former was also so kind to examine the crash data file. They all agreed that

"the 'kernel memory fault' panic has absolutely nothing to do
with your physical or virtual memory"

and

"The invalid memory read access from kernel mode means the page you
tried to read was protected against access (ie tried to read from user mode
a kernel mode page). This does not indicate your memory is bad."

There was also consensus to scan the patch site for any patches to DU 3.2
(ftp://ftp.service.digital.com/public/Digital_UNIX/v3.2d-1/) since my "crash
is a common one seen without the patches".
