Acrobat does not find fonts

Can anyone explain the following behaviour:

I run Adobe acroread on a DEC 8400. It works fine. Then I copy the
entire Acroreader directory structure as such to a Digital workstation
and to the very same location as it was on the DEC 8400.

Next, I run the acroread on the workstation. It no longer finds any
fonts not shipped with the package! That is, any font not shipped with
the Acroread does not work even if it has definitely been loaded into
the PDF file being read. In other words: the same PDF file works fine
in the DEC 8400, but not in the workstation, even though both have
identical acroreader installations. This is strange and it looks as if
there was some problem in the workstation X-window installation.

Any pointers where I should start looking for the problem? From the
above, I'd conclude the acroread is working ok.
