Malloc problem stopping expire

Our news server is going to overflow everything in sight unless we can
overcome the failing expire program. The error shows in the expire log as
follows:

expire begin Sun Oct 11 17:21:04 BST 1998: (-v1 -c -e '-d/data4' '-rExpiring 23376 on /data4' -u/spare//log/expire.index.rm -z/spare//log/expire.rm -Z/spare//log/expire.lowmark)
Can't malloc 65243988 bytes, Not enough space
expire end Sun Oct 11 17:21:09 BST 1998

I am not a programmer but assume that the malloc is trying to allocate
memory to run and is not being allowed to do so by the operating system as
it is demanding too much. Is that right? It is not short of disk space
so must be memory of one sort or another.
This is an Alpha1000 running 3.2c with 256mb memory.

Can anybody please tell me what to tune (as quickly as possible!!) to
allow the expire to run before the history files inexorably eat up all the
disk space.

Thankyou.
