New Box Procedure

Hi all,

I need an opinion on the process of migrating from one machine to another.

We're getting in a new Alpha to replace our 2100, which will replace
ANOTHER 2100. Just to make things easier, we'll call the new one NEW, the
one being replaced ADMIN (and forget about the third for the time being).

ADMIN is currently at 3.2d-1. It is also a production server (i.e., not to
be taken down frivolously) running enhanced security. NEW will come in at
4.0D. I know that the process of upgrading changes the enhanced security
password database, so simply moving over all of the stuff on ADMIN to NEW
will not work (right?).

Hence, there are two methods of attack:

1. Upgrade ADMIN to DU4.0D and halt production for a day. Then move
everything over to the new system.

2. Make one of the disks on NEW be a bootable 3.2d-1 disk. Upgrade that,
then move everything over.

I am obviously leaning toward option 2. Do you see any problem with this?
Is there an easier way? It would be ideal if we could just move everything
over from the 3.2d-1 ADMIN directly to NEW, which would be a fresh install
of DU, but what happens to our passwd file and our enhanced security?

As always, any and all friendly advice is welcome. I will summarize!

Regards,

        Sheryl
