Summary Upgrading from Unix 3.2c to 4.0d

I have a request to give a summary of the responses I received for this
topic.

Full Install:

I wouldn't trust an upgrade of that many os revisions on top of each
other.
I would backup all the partitions with vdump or dump, install 4.0d from
the beginning and restore the files that you need as latstartupconf,
inittab, printcap etc....
Full install if you have a free disk(we will) only down sides are if
something gets missed in the configuration and/or 3rd party software.
This method is cleaner.
Doesn't sound like a good idea to me as far as I know there's not a
shortcut to go directly from 3.2c to 4.0d unless you do a fresh install.

Total for a clean install 6

Update Installation:

It takes a lot of skill and nerve to catch and preserve all changes that
were made to your machine since 3.2c was installed.
The correct upgrade path is via 3.2g->4.0a->4.0a->4.0d This will
transfer all of your configs(networks, users, security, mount points,
etc). One catch though. If 3.2c was installed with the default disk
partitions(root=75mb) you will not have enough disk space to do a proper
upgrade.. Friendly warning. Do not run the upgrade if you have less
that (about) 250mb free on you root partition.

>From unix.dec.com supported upgrade path from 3.2c to 4.0d is
3.2c->3.2g
3.2g->4.0a
4.0a->4.0d

Total for update installation 6.

Summary half feel you can do the fresh install, half feel you should do
the update install.
I've discussed this with the vendor and have been assured they are good
enough to do the fresh install. They have yet to call me back about
firmware updates, but are looking into it. They have done this before
with Unidata with no problems, so why pay for the patches. We have done
very little customization. I have a script in place for EasySpooler to
work properly with lpr/Unidata and I know it will have a problem when
it's moved, Not a big deal. The other I expect to have problems with
Unidata. I have the cd so I will schedule the following day to
reinstall if it pukes. If it doesn't then the users will be happy.
Soooo we're going with the fresh install.
Thanks again I do appreciate all the great responses I received This was
a summary and does include all the of them. If you would like
specifics let me know, I can share.
Thanks

ps I would like to subscribe to this listserve. I found this on the
web, so I'm not sure of the proper procedure to get on.
