CDE not loading on console

Greetings all:

I have an AS 1000A that was just recently upgraded to DU4.0D. When we
did the OS load, we discovered that the video card driver that was in
the server was not in the EISA configuration. Therefore, it could not
load a graphics console up for us. I believe the driver was taken out
by a previous SA due to kernel panics when the server was 3.2G.

We loaded the driver back into the configuration, ran ECU to update the
firmware for it, set the console variable to graphics mode and have
rebuilt the kernel. When we are booting up, the OS successfully finds
the video card, and tries to start the CDE, however, it will give an
error:

"The X-server cannot be started on display :0..."

and will then give us a standard login prompt after it's usual speech
about being unable to load the CDE. Any ideas on how to get the CDE to
load on the console?

Thanks,
