My question:

The most unfortunate answer, from Dr. Tom Blinn:

"The answer is remarkably simple: The 8400 class systems don't have any of
the hardware sensors built into them that are needed by the environmental
 monitoring software subsystem.

You can get things like video cameras, thermometers and voltmeters with
digital outputs, and the like and build a solution, but that's expensive and
not well integrated with the system.

As far as I know, there are no plans to ever develop hardware for the 8400
family of systems that would allow the system software to do what you seem
 to want. Sorry.."

I am amazed at this. I just discovered pmgr's capability
to set thresholds and do email notification, and was very enthused about this,
since we lost one of our 4100's yesterday afternoon due to a fan failure which
caused it to overheat and shutdown. If it had had threshold notification
set up, it would have told us in advance of shutdown that there was a problem,
and we could have prevented (possibly) a 1-hour downtime on a critical
production system. As far as I'm concerned, all systems should have something
(MIBs, or an env. monitor package) that comes with the system and that
can be set up to be monitored and do notification *BEFORE* problems occur.

sigh...

Anyway, thanks, Dr. Blinn.
