I was able to quickly find the problem: /sbin/kloadsrv was
mysteriously not running any longer! Digital/Compaq says they've
seen this happen under high internet-connection loads. I simply
restarted it:
# /sbin/kloadsrv
/sbin/init.d/autosysconfig does this at boot time.
Other suggestions were to check /vmunix for being re-built (but no
reboot yet) or stripped.
