In particular, thanks Rodrigo for helping me find the swcrmgr software
I needed.

To summarise:

It was possible to hot swap the failed disk, and it rebuilt on the fly
without any manual intervention. Once I had installed the swcrmgr
software I was able to check that the disk was now back ONLINE.

Here are the full replies I received:

If you know which drive it is, you can replace it while the system is
up and the controller should rebuild the drive on its own.

Of course, those swxcr's are notoriously flaky so be careful.

The only way to do this replacement online with V4.0D is to install the
products:

Raid Array 200 Management Utility V1.2.0
SWXCR123 Storage Raid Array 200 Management Utility

If you haven't got these versions then you must use the standalone RCU.

The functionality of the swxcrmgr software is supposed to have been
taken over by the StorageWorks Command Console. It is a pretty nice
product, and provides you with a central console for monitoring
SWXCRS, HSZ*, and HSJ* controllers running under DU, WinNT, and VMS.
If you have an HSZ, you should be licensed for SWCC. You can find
the software on the DEC StorageWorks web page.

Now the downside: The SWCC only runs on Wintel boxes. You need to load
new agents on the boxes that you want to monitor -- DO NOT try to run
the SWCC agents for RA200 and the swxcrmon daemons at the same time (its
in the docs).

NOTE: I haven't actually tried to rebuild a disk on an RA200, but I just
used the SWCC to create a new RAID 3/5 set on a RAID450 array yesterday.

If you can't find the swxcrmgr you can install one. It should be on a
diskette shipped with your swxcr. Just use setld to install it. I've
been using it on a 4.0D and a KZPSC 3-port controller.

I hope you have the proper answer by now but I had to throw in my 2
cents. I manage 80 Alphas across the U.S. with 90% running swxcr RAID
0+1
and all on 4.0D. So long as your FAULT MANAGEMENT is enabled it should
just be an on the fly swap out.

The biggest problem that I have is when Compaq comes out and wants to
use
the swxcrmgr tool. The last time I lost a drive at the home office I
took
the replacement drive from the engineer (as he was mumbling something
about
management tools) and swapped it with the bad drive. I then told him to
watch and within 30 seconds all of the drives started pounding away to
rebuild the replacement drive. Unless you find someone that actually
understands swxcr they just tend to #($%* things up.

You will need to reinstall
the Raid Configuration utility for Digital unix
that came with the RAID Board.
its setld installable....
mount the diskette, cd to the diskette, and do a setld -l .
It requires to have the c++ shared libraries installed.
