The original problem report:

This is sort of embarrasing, but the solution would seem to be
INSTALL A COMPILER! Dumb me, it didn't even occur to me that
the problem was the build script was trying to compile and I
didn't have a compiler on this system. (Guess the fact that
I've been fiddling with Linux lately had me confused.)
