(Using OSF1 V4.0b 564 alpha with enhanced security.)
I've searched through the archive and found some very useful information
about how to recover from lost root pass. In my case, I have no clue how
it happened, but it happened and needs to be taken care of immediately.
1. Many have suggested (some suggested shutting it down by shutdown -h
but I can't do that without being root?), to hit the reset button and
get to >>> but I'm only two months old as a digital Unix administrator,
and haven't seen too many reboots, can't say that I have seen that
chicken tracks on it before. (I have seen that on other Ultrix that we
have) Could somebody PLEASE tell me I'm gonna see those when I hit the
reset button?
2. If I see it, type: 'b -fl s' (or 'boot -fl s') to boot into single user
mode.
If I don't ctrl-C to interrupt the fsck? to drop myself to single user
mode? (though not recommended?)
3. type '/sbin/bcheckrc' or 'mount -u /' to mount root partition.
4. run 'passwd' to change root pass and go into multi-user mode.
Am I on the right track?
Anyone out there experienced the loss of root password on OSF1 v4.0b with
enhanced security who went throught with this?
Millions of thanks in advance!
