Hello All,
I have a question, but it's a bit vague as I don't really have enough
information. Still, I need to find some directions to go in and perhaps
there is someone who has been done this path and might offer some
guidance?
My company is installing an Alpha system with Oracle 7.3. As part of the
install they are running a class for the users to familiarize them with
the new system. The Alpha is a three hundred something Megahertz with
512 Megabytes of memory. They say (I'm not where the machine is... YET)
that when running with a TYPICAL user load of 3-4 users, the machine
runs OK. But in the class, when 11 people enter the same database
queery, it can take 5 minutes for a response. I find that really
hard to imagine. First of all, I *thought* Oracle was smart enough
to cache queery results so there would not even need to BE 11 lookups.
Secondly, that's an awfuly lot of computing horesepower to be THAT slow.
Something *must* be seriously misconfigured. My problem is, I haven't
used Oracle in years, and never at all on Alpha/DU. Since I'm somewhat
familiar with DU, I've been asked to look into this, but I don't really
have a clue where to start.
I'm currently scanning the archives for past insights, but so far have
not come upon that magic answer.
Any suggestions of where to look, how to look, or what might help
would be most appreciated.
