SUMMARY: Jazz Drive Boot Device

I received replies from Dr. Tom Blinn (tpb_at_doctor.zk3.dec.com) and Tom
Webster (webster_at_ssdpdc.lgb.cal.boeing.com). Dr. Blinn stated that it
will work, however Jazz media is not the most reliable media in the
world, so AdvFS would not be recommended. He also stated that it
should boot.

Mr. Webster commented that starting with DU4.0 Digital implemented
additional features to disklabel to protect us from ourselves. He has
had some luck zeroing a the label first. Mr. Webster indicated that
depending on the DU version, newfs may not work.

Personally, I have experience with Zip drives on my FreeBSD boxes at
home. I have a FreeBSD desktop here at work. Since FreeBSD reports
the drive's fictitious geometry I will attach the Jazz drive to FreeBSD
first to have FreeBSD report the geometry of the drive, then use that
information to build a disktab entry for the Jazz drive for DU. I
suspect that editing Jazz drive disk labels to have the same
restrictions as other disks.

I'll post a followup once the drive has been purchased and tested.
