DE500-BA on DU4.0B as second card

Hello managers

My question is similar to Lee Hawkins' re the DE500-BA 10/100 ethernet card.
A 100Mb card was required for DU 4.0B to replace to 10Mb card, and the
500DE-BA ended up being ordered, but no unix documentation/drivers arrived,
just windows. I searched the archives and found valuable information re
installing a second card. Running 4.0B, I first needed megapatch #6 (I used
#8) to even see the card at unix level. Booting off genvmunix didn't help
to configure the card, but I was able to configure it manually. I have now
reached the following situation:

After the patch, tu1 was created. I duplicated the tu0 line in my kernel
file, replacing with the appropriate slot number. When the system boots, it
sees the second card, but returns the following message:

        tu1: DECchip 21442 Rev 3.0
        tu1: auto negotiation capable device
        tu1: can't support multi-port cards
tu1 in slot 8 not probed.

I have set the console variable ewb0_mode to FastFD. What else am I
missing?

As a secondary question of pure interest, why don't tu0/1 appear in /dev?

Tia
Gavin
