Input/Output filters for remote print queues

We have an application that produces reports as plain text files,
and we have old-fashioned printers that know only postscript. What
is the best approach in sending the reports to these printers? They
are all remote printers out on the network somewhere, and a coworker
tells me the in-filter 'if' does not work with remote printers!

Should we be using out-filters, aka 'of'?

Could we get some sample 'of' scripts that any of you have seen or
written that will take a plain text file, convert it to postscript
before sending it out for printing?

   Thanks muchly,

PS. I guess the version of OS doesn't matter here, but if you need
to know, it is DIGITAL UNIX 4.0b!
