password prompt for "captive" user

I know this has been asked before, but I can't find a summary:

How do I disable the password prompt at login for a captive user with a null
password? I've tried various permutations of the following to no avail:

        :u_exp#0:u_life#0:\
        :u_pickpw_at_:u_genpwd_at_:u_nullpw:\
        :u_genchars_at_:u_genletters_at_:
