Problem with 100BaseTX configuration

I am experiencing problems when enabling the 100baseTX option on some 1200
and 4100 Alpha servers.

All servers are firmware release 5.2, Digital Unix 4.0D and Patch Kit 2
(Jul98)

I am not getting anywhere near the 100Mb/s transfer rate while in either
100BaseTX Full or Half Duplex mode. I have set this option at the firmware
level (ewa0_mode= Fast or FastFD). I seem to be getting bursts of traffic,
about 10k at a time every few seconds. If the card is set to 10Mb/s, then
all is well.

The servers are connected into ports of a 7600 Fast Eth card on a 3Com
Corebuilder 7000 with a 7000HD switch card. (It also has an ATM module card
if that matters). Some switch ports are set to auto-sensing and it does
detect the correct card speed. Other ports are fixed to 100baseTX FD.

There is no network congestion on the switch. I have had mixed results
while transferring files (through FTP) between servers. Some seem to get
the full 100Mb/s rate one way, but not the other way. Some don't get it
either way.

Any help will be appreciated.

Regards,

Zoran Kalenic.
