Is it possible to set up Digital UNIX 4.0b to support several protocols
over a single modem?
Problem: I'd like to get terminal connection, PPP, FAX and possibly
SLIP going through the same modem, one at a time, of course. Now, if I
enable getty for the modem port, it is usable for incoming terminal
connections, but no ppp nor outgoing calls. If I enable pppd, then I
can't do a terminal login etc. The PPP and SLIP would be incoming
calls only, but terminal connections and FAX should be both incoming
and outgoing services.
Is it possible at all? Could I use saf (sacadm) to create different
port monitor tags for each protocol? Do such tags exist or
do I have to create everything from scratch? If so, does such an
operation require the SYSV PAK(s) to work or not?
I know this kind of modem operation is easily done with Solaris, since
it uses saf by default and includes nice, graphical tools to set up
modems, ports, terminals etc. In DEC UNIX there is no such tool and
again, the documentation about modem setup is nil. Fortunately, there
is the osf-managers list archive and one excellent posting, how to set
up modems in the first place... Maybe this is another good
piece of information to add into the FAQ or documentation
set?
