Hi,

Earlier today I sent out the request for help that's shown below. I

There are three answers:

1) The /proc directory and its contents do not use any disk space since it
pertains to memory.

2) Even if the /proc files used any disk space, they would overload the
/proc filesystems rather than the root filesystem since /proc is it's own
mount point. That is obvious and I was in a hurry for a solution so I
overlooked that.

3) The space hogging culprit is somewhere in the root file system (I knew
that, just assumed /proc was part of the root file system which it's not
since it has it's own mount point). The main suggestions were to look in
the /tmp and /dev subdirectories.

When I looked in my /tmp directory, I found huge files that were indeed the
cause of the / filesystem overload so I deleted them and all is well.

-----------------------------------
I run DEC unix V4.0B on a DEC alpha server 1000. As indicated below, my
root file system is overloaded:

Filesystem 512-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on
/dev/re0a 127134 126798 0 111% /
/proc 0 0 0 100% /proc
/dev/re0g 3605822 742398 2502840 23% /usr
/dev/re1g 24003988 2913572 18690016 14% /raid

The reason my root file system is overloaded is because of the presence of
the files below which recently invaded my /proc directory:

dr-xr-xr-x 2 root system 16416 Jan 7 09:10 ./
drwxr-xr-x 19 root system 1024 Dec 29 13:09 ../

-rw------- 1 root daemon 17383424 Jan 7 09:10 10814

How do I remove the files above? There must be an indirect way because the
direct "rm" and "chmod" commands won't work on these files though I've
tried as root.
