Workaround to convuser and long usernames?

Hello! I'm going to have to turn to the gurus on this one. I would
like to enable enhanced security on one of our systems running dUnix 4.0b
but I've run into a problem. We have several accounts with names longer
than eight characters that are used for POP3 e-mail access. They are
not shell accounts. When convuser runs it barfs on those accounts
with the following message:

Username too long for cuserid(3), skipped: biglongname

I've about decided to write my own little program to read through
passwd and update the protected database myself, but figured I'd
better check with the list to see if a better solution already exists.

Thanks very much for your help,
