Locked keyboard and mouse

Hello managers -
I am hoping that there is an easy solution to the
following problem that I just experienced.

During a logout on my machine, the login screen came
back okay, but the mouse and keyboard no longer functioned.
The mouse arrow would not move, and pressing "caps lock" did
not even light the indicator on the keyboard.

From a remote terminal we tried running

        /sbin/init.d/xlogin stop
        /sbin/init.d/xlogin start

to stop and then restart the login screen. This did not solve
the problem. After about 1/2 hour looking for something similar
for the mouse and keyboard, we gave in and rebooted the machine**.

After rebooting, everything appears to work fine again.

My question is - Is there a program similar to xlogin that will
allow a "reset" of the mouse and keyboard? Or, if they lock up
do you have to reboot the machine?

Also, in our Xservers file in /usr/dt/config we have the following line:

            :0 Local local_at_console /usr/bin/X11/X :0 -screen 1280 -vsync 85 -terminate

we put in the -terminate so that every time I logged out, Xdec would get reset.
Therefore, its memory usage is prevented from growing out of control.
(I am somewhat new to all of this, so I am not sure exactly what the
         -terminate command does)

         Any help is greatly appreciated.

** Now for this. As a word of advice, make sure that the login
screen is up before you shutdown. We had run xlogin stop before
we shutdown the machine. You get an error message saying it can't
find the Xlogin manager, the shutdown is aborted and then you are put
in single user mode - not to
bad if your mouse and keyboard work. So we had to turn the computer off.

        Thanks in advance.
As everyone else says this group is the best. It has helped me learn so
much in such a small amount of time.

Sincerely,
Ron Bowman
