I installed the latest patch aggregate (I hoped the
C-compiler problem would get fixed). However, the
patch cluster broke the system into an almost
unusable state.
The operating system is Digital UNIX 4.0b.
The worst problem is:
Error acquiring pty slave as controlling terminal: not a
typewriter.
Or.
tty_login: not a typewriter
That is, ptys do not work any more. That effectively prevents login
from the net, through a serial port, etc. Only console works in text
mode. How do I correct this? I already deleted all the installed
patches, but that did not help, so it did not recover the system back
to its original state.
Another problem is, that SMNP would not start. It complains it needs to
get started from init state S.
Another problem: SCSI device complains it can't find database entries
for _any_ disks any more and uses defaults instead.
Is there a way to reinstall the entire system without having to wipe
the disks? That is, how can I reinstall the system so, that it just
overwrites the files on the disk? That would recover the system back to
its original state and hopefully make the system operational again.
Before you ask, I did remove the patch aggregate 5 before starting as
the README instructs. I followed the instructions and still it broke.
