Thanks for Dr. Blinn and Simon Tardell for the hints!

Keyboard mappings in text mode (the mode, when you select "Command Line
Login" from the CDE login menu) are dependant on the language variable
in console firmware. However, the mappings do not appear to be
identical in console firmware and under DEC UNIX 4.0b. The firmware
interprets keys correctly, but the kernel may or may not. That might be
caused by hardware incompatibility, though.

You can set the console variable to something invalid to get a list of
valid choices. Then set it to something, that best describes your
keyboard type. I set it to Finnish, but exactly that caused the
pipe-character to go away. Then I used a Swedish keyboard type and pipe
reappeared. Some other special characters went strange, but that
doesn't matter much. So, some experimentation with the language
variable can be useful.
