Adding disks causes problems

I'm trying to add 4 9Gb disks to an alphastation 3000/600(Digital UNIX
V3.2C)

It was failing miserably, so I backed of my fileserver and tried to
add them to another, less critical machine, An alphastation 4/250
(Digital UNIX V3.2C)

Things still didn't work, so I went the piecemeal approach to adding
the disks.

Problem is as follows:

I can add any 2 of the disks to the SCSI chain and they work. (Yes I
picked unused SCSI id's).

When I add more than 2 devices to the chain, I lose my boot device.
(Using 'sh dev' from the prom monitor).

Weirdness is as follows:

Add 2 disks at SCSI id 1,2, they work.

Take them off, add 3rd disk at SCSI id 3, it works.

Add 3 disks at SCSI id's 1,2,3, I lose my boot device.

Question:

Am I running up against a system limit ? (Cabeling shouldn't(?) be a
problem as all 4 disks are in a 4pack and I'm using a 3ft cable.)

All help appreciated.
