Adding disks causes problems (SUMMARY)

Thanks for all the suggestions:

Turns out the problem was twofold:

1. The 4pack was shipped with internal termination jumpered on EACH
drive. This leaves me with the question of why I could see TWO drives
rather than just one...but OK that's taken care of.

2. Bad drive in the mix. Hooked the 4pack up to a box with an Adaptec
2940uw to use it's most excellent SCSI diag utility, and it showed
   a not happy drive.

Yanked jumpers, pulled bad drive, next thing you know old Jed's a
millionaire.

Many thanks to all who responded !!
