Dear OSF-gurus,
Thanks for the advice concerning the drive. You will be
pleased to know (but not as pleased as we are!) that we have our alpha
working again with a IBM 4GB UltraStar 2ES 8.5ms (DCAS 34330)- we are
very happy with it....nice and quiet compared to our old drive!
My original question was to which drive to buy out of the
following list- if they overheated etc. inside a DEC 3000 Model 300

> Fujitsu M2952S 2.2 GB AV Ultra SCSI 8ms
> Hitatchi DK328H43WS 4.3GB SCSI Wide
> IBM 2GB UltraStar ES 8.5ms (Wide)
> IBM 4GB UltraStar 2ES 8.5ms (DCAS 34330)
> Micropolis 4.5GB 7.9ms Ultra SCSI 4345NS
> Quantum Fireball ST 2.16GB SCSI
> Quantum Fireball ST 3.2GB SCSI
> Seagate ST52160N Medalist Pro 2.1GB Ultra SCSI
> Seagate ST32171N Barracuda 2.1GB Ultra SCSI
> Western Digital 2.1GB Ultra SCSI
> Western Digital 2.1GB Ultra Wide SCSI

Eveyone agreed that the Micropolis drives were flakey- they are
now out of business, so don't touch them, and that I
should avoid wide SCSI, keep to 5200 rpm or below- the Quantum and the
Seagate were also highly recommended- no one is sure about the Fujitsu or
the Hitachi

Many thanks once again to the list including:
