I have a question on upgrading.
A client has a $15K Alphaserver 1000A 4/266 which did not come with
the OS disk (just the paper) apparently it was $800 more for media.
Digital wants some $3000+ to upgrade to 4.0 anything.
His only options are:
1) Migrate to NT (not even sure NT will run)
2) pay war prices for the upgrade
3) find out how other companies are getting free upgrades from digital
and why he isn't.
4) run the very latest Linux 2.0.37? which just recently had noritake?
or rather 1000A support, how stable?
I will no longer support him if he goes #1.
I would rather he go #2 or #3, he says he will never give Digital another
cent, since he considers the upkeep cost on the machine way too
much (Storage Works required for all Drives, which make drives x3 cost)
In a worst case I will suggest #4.
At least it is unix like, even if it is chaotic and likely not stable.
I welcome any comments especially on how to do #3.
