Still problems with booting Alpha

hi all

The replies I have recieved had asked mostly what steps I took to crash
the computer and the software I was installing. The software I attempted
to install is called ABAQUS.

The steps were straight out of the manual, I have just listed everything
1. create directory
2. chmod of that directory
3. mount the CD, I had problems with this, as the files that it found
refused to run, therefore copied the contents of the CD (using my PC's
CD and ftped files up to the DEC Alpha) on to the RAID drive that is
connected and installed from there
4. Ran the relevant files and the job completed
5. Then the licence for the software needs installed, this is carried
out by running another file.
6. During this installation a error message appeared about a file called
tr (can't remember the directory), something about permission denied
7. Then the machine hung, most of the operating system commands refused
to run, but managed to halt it and reboot.

The suggestions so far involve getting the CD, this appears lost in the
Computer Centre just now, currently being looked for. As to the manuals
for the computer, they don't exist as far as I know (on-line
documentation !).

The only good thing there is a back up of the system on tape, it gets
backed up over night so a copy of the system files exists, which is
uncorrupted.

The other errors that appear are

/sbin/rc3.d/S30rmtmpfiles: xargs: cannot execute
/sbin/rc3.d/s18nfs: /bin/ps: cannot execute
/sbin/rc3.d/s95xdm: /usr/bin/x11/xdm: cannot execute

Another point that was being asked is the University no longer supports
UNIX as they have gone over have gone over to using NT servers.

So thanks so far to
Tom Leitner
Lucio Chiappetti
Steve Obrien

for there suggestions

The scripts in the init.d files tries to run and that is why the above
errors appear

Thanks
