This is not really a SUMMARY because I didn't post any questions on the
issue. I just wanted to share this peculiar behavior.
PROBLEM:
After installing your first Netscape Enterprise Server 3.01, none of the
servers you install afterwards can be started by using the admin utility.
(e. g. You are able to start only the first server you install but not the
rest) If you use the admin utility you get the following message:
Cannot start server: unknown error
If you check the error log you find these messages:
... Initializing ContentMgt:
MetaInit: failed ...
error in fn=(Late) in Init
error in fn=... , etc
In the logs directory there is an ns file of the form ns*.log This file
usually contains a permissions error, it says, dblist could not be read...
Even if you change the permissions in this file, the servers don't start and
you get the similar messages in the error log but no ns*.log is produced.
SOLUTION:
This documented problem is caused by installing servers under different
users. AT the moment you install your first server, the admin server
configures the whole server to be accessible to the user of the first
server. It mainly configures the Content Management libraries. This means
that if your first serve is running as root, you won't be able to start any
server that is not root. This problem is not common because most users us
'nobody' or a different user to run any web server. The only way to fix this
problem is to delete very server, re-install the admin and enterprise
servers, and start all over again. This time using only one user. The other
way is to painfully change the ownership of every content management file,
this is not easy because they are all over the place, and there are also
some other files affected.
