Greetings to everyone.
The short form of the question is: what options do I have for replacing
a PMAG-DA TurboChannel PXG video card on a DEC 3000/400 under DEC
Unix v4.0D? More details below.
I have been in the process of upgrading a DEC Alpha 3000 model 400
from DEC Unix v3.2D-2 to v4.0D (eventually) to insure Y2K compliance.
Thanks to the searchable WWW archive for this list, I was able to work
my way through two eventful kernel builds getting from 3.2D-2 to 3.2G
and then to v4.0A.
Imagine my chagrin when I got 4.0A to build and found that my video
card, a PMAG-DA (PXG) on TurboChannel, was no longer supported. The
searchable archive again was informative in confirming that the
only option was to purchase a new card.
DEC support and sales inform us that the PMAGB-BA would have been
supported, at least up to 4.0B, but is no longer produced. We can get
a refurbished PMAGD-AA, but I don't think that it supports our
monitor - a VRT19-HA. And I would like a little more assurance
that the card won't be obsolete next week in case of further OS
upgrades in the future.
Year 2000 compliance is a necessary factor, so moving back to 3.2G
is not an option.
I am eager to find out if this list can provide any options or
solutions that DEC channels could not.

-Karl
