Ethernet controller on AS500/500

We've just taken delivery of 3 AlphaStation 500/500s. We were under the
impression that these systems came with 10/100BaseT Ethernet controllers.
We started one up, set ewa0_mode to Fast and booted it up. Judging by the
error message we get, it doesn't do 100Mbps :

... vmunix: tu0: DECchip 21040: Revision: 2.6
... vmunix: tu0: bad console (ew_)mode selected for device
... vmunix: tu0 in pci slot 6 not probed

The 21040, as I understand, is a 10BaseT controller only.

Were we wrong in assuming we would get a 10/100 controller?
