Thanks for the quick replies. They confirmed my suspicions of
a hardware problem. I will arrange to get the hardware doctor
to investigate.

Thanks again.

Machine checks are hardware problems of some sort. It could
be the CPU, the data paths, the memory controller, something
close to the CPU in the I/O path, etc. Definately hardware
though.

Your cpu BOARD is dead or something equally serious.
I would make sure I ran whatever tests are available at the console prompt.
(I don't remember what command that might be on a DEC machine).

Power cycle everything. Open the chassis and pull and re-insert any
connectors and boards you can inside and outside.
Reduce to a minimal system (just the original memory and a CDROM drive).
If none of that works, call Digital (or Compaq).

=====
My Question was:

=>
=>Hello
=>
=>We have a DECalpha 3000/700, with 128mb memory, running OSF v3.0.
=>It crashed and I cannot boot either from disk or distribution CD.
=>Here's what I get booting from CD:
=>
=> ======
=>
=> **** System Machine Check Abort has occurred ****
=>
=>PC = 00079924
=>PS = 00000000.0016FE66
=>MCHK+000 = 00000000.000001E0
=>MCHK+008 = 000001A0.00000110
=>MCHK+010 = 00000001.0000008E
=>MCHK+018 = 00000000.00104000
=>MCHK+020 = 000005F8.00000004
=>MCHK+028 = 00000000.0005AD2C
=>MCHK+030 = 00000000.00000003
=>MCHK+038 = 00000000.00000000
=>0=FFFFFFFF.FFFFFFF3
=>MCHK+088 = 00000000.00000007
=>MCHK+090 = 00000000.00001400
=>MCHK+098 = 00000000.00007400
=>MCHK+0A0 = 00000000.00121068
=>
=> ======
=>The machine then just hangs.
=>
=>On trying again, i get the same numbers except for the last four
=>lines.
=>
=>Is the CPU dead or is it something else?
=>Any pointers on where to look, etc would be appreciated.
