Hello,
I recently installed Digital Unix 4.0D on AS1000A, 5/300 with Fore
PCA200EUX card. I'll try to summarize all problems I faced/'m facing, and
would to hear from others if you share the problem or not....
I'm it will be very difficult, but will try to summarize.

*******
1. /sbin/rc3.d/S49snmpd is looking for /etc/thresholds.dat, when it does
not find it, looks for /etc/thresholds.dat.bak. I don't have
/etc/thresholds.dat, and /etc/thresholds.dat.bak has zero size. The same
is on at least one machine also...

2. My syslogd, as someone proposed on this list, does not respect
/etc/syslog.conf and facilities/priorities, and writes messages into "any"
syslog file. Thus in /nsr/logs/messages I have messages produced during
bootup, unsuccessfull ftp logins etc. Unresolved. Probably will compile my
own syslogd.

3. Can't run nwrecover to restore data from tapes with Network 4.4. See my
previous mail to this list.

 a) It "probably" wrongly detects if you have installed TCR/ACE cluster
on yor system (different install procedure), or just the
verification procedure tries to check for ASE component, even
you don't have them installed. Could anyone try:
`setld -v BRXSOAKIT440` on system without ASE and tell me if it
failed or not?

 b) nwrestore exits with message: `SYSTEM error, No such file or directory`

4. Minor problem: Digital Unix 4.0D install CD:

/var - empty directory
/usr/var - full directory with files
Shouldn't be /var lin to /usr/var

5. /var/adm/lastlog has permissions: -rw------- root system
Thus any finger request fails with a message:

> prfdec% finger petrnach
> finger: /usr/adm/lastlog open error
> Login name: petrnach (messages off) In real life: Petr Nachtmann
> Office: TS UAMVT, 2195 2615
> Directory: /usr/home/petrnach Shell: /bin/tcsh
> On since Feb 20 13:09:47

Of course affect last command also. I don;t know if that's a security
feature, or if it should be world-readable.....

6. Cannot use xdm:
root_at_prfdec# more /usr/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-errors
Cannot load library dix: dlopen: Cannot map library libdix.so
Cannot find or open library libdix.so in path:
/usr/athena/lib/X11:/usr/athena/lib:/usr/share/lib/X11:/usr/share/lib:/usr/lib/X11:/usr/lib:
/usr/local/lib/X11:/usr/local/lib:/usr/fore/lib/X11:/usr/fore/lib
Cannot load all core libraries.
Aborting.
xdm error (pid 23095): server unexpectedly died
xdm error (pid 23095): Server for display :0 can't be started, session disabled
root_at_prfdec#

7. .dtprofile
When I added mistakenly on three lines the PATH variable, dtterm and
dxterm generate core dumps. (unhandled variable??? != security bug?)

Add the following lines to the end of ~/.dtprofile. Now each line beginns
with ####. Remove them! Insert the rest of the line, like
PATH=/root/b........
On new line add
/etc:/usr/sb.........
####PATH=/root/bin:/root/bin/syscheck:/usr/athena/bin:/usr/athena/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local
####/etc:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/i18n/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/local/bin/X11:/usr/dt/bin:/usr/tcb/b
####in:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/bin/mtools:/root/scripts:/usr/local/netscape:

After logging OUT and again IN to CDE, you won't be able to start any
dtterm or dxterm. ;-)

(then run dtedit from iconspace, edit .dtprofile, and logout .....)

8. mtools
This "problem" was already on 4.0 - couldn't be during installation made
the link from /dev/fddrive to the floppy drive device? I did it by hand,
but at least it increases traffic on some conference lists. ;-)

9. I had even problem with CDE sessin startup - cannot find
libproplist.so, but this appeared probably only once. Now I can run only
CDE, even uninstalling of all X11 subsets did not solve the problem (xdm
doesn't start, see hint nr. 6).

10. I have the system running with FORE digital_4.0.3_1.6 driver, seems to
work fine.

root_at_prfdec# tcpdump -i el0
tcpdump: pfopen: el0: No such file or directory
tcpdump: your system may not be properly configured; see "man packetfilter"
root_at_prfdec#

I thin manpage to packetfilter(7) hasn't been changed. I still speaks only
about 10Mbit Ethernet and FDDI. In relnotes Digital promisses better
packetfilter support - somewhere in LANE module? Because I don't use
Digital's ATM kernel modules, it's still unclear if we could get
packetfilter running on ATM interface without their modules - and without
their ATMWorks interfaces. :) . At least one person on this list
said that it will work, but in that case I still don't know how to
configure system. On Tulip ethernet card everything works fine.

So, does anyone have same/different troubles with Digital Unix 4.0D?

------------
Please, before you upgrade, don't miss as I did this. I did not use
installupdate, I started on new partitions, just had to link my old
domains to new OS (in /etc/fdmns).

Subject: Re: SUMMARY: UFS vs. AdvFS on /
Note that the release notes for 4.0D, page 2-7, advise one to run verify
on one's AdvFS's before doing an upgrade installation. While doing this
I noticed the -r flag to verify for checking the root_domain, which does
seem to do stuff. This is also in 4.0B (at least, I don't know
about earlier versions), and is documented in the man page.
/sbin/advfs/verify -r root_domain
I've done this during upgrades with no problem.
