binmail: cannot create lock file /usr/spool/mail/USERID.lock

Dear Managers,

We got some problems with mail. The mail spool area /usr/spool/mail
is auto-mounted on several machines. If we try to start mail applications,
we get

cannot create lock file /usr/spool/mail/USERID.lock

What may the reason be?
How to overcome the problem without booting all machines?
