The answer is:
Adding a user's primary group information to /etc/group
merely created long lines there which could cause problems with
editors or even simply with attempts to parse the entries. Since
the primary group information is taken from /etc/passwd anyway,
the duplication in /etc/group was merely redundant clutter, and
thus was removed.
More (from Declan):
... but as you will note
from the man page for adduser, the recommended utility for this purpose
is now useradd (or dxaccounts).
