netscape communicator java?

I know this has been discussed before, but I can't find the discussion for
it. We've just put the latest (admittedly beta) release of Netscape
Communicator on our alphas (v4.04) and for normal HTML docs it works just
fine. But if you fire up Java for any reason, even the smallest, simplest
applet - the whole thing goes off into lala-land and never returns. Its not
even swapping - its just sitting there waiting.

What is the trick to let Java function properly? We're running Digital Unix
4.0B with all subsets installed. Many thanks in advance.
