pine crashes when sending mail

Dear All,

This is on a new osf 4.0d system, and I'm trying to install pine 3.96.

It all compiles sweetly, but when I attempt to send a message pine
crashes with:

Stack overflow: pid 1436, proc pine, addr 0x11fdffff0, pc 0x3ff800d3ca0
memory fault(coredump)

Any ideas please?
