     DUNIX Managers,

     I recently added a tape drive (DLT TZ87N) to a 2100a, running Digital
     UNIX 4.0D. I am using advfs, tape does respond to rewind, status.. but
     when I vdump I get:
     vdump: unable to write to device </dev/rmt0h>; [5] I/O error vdump:

     Any ideas? appreciate your help and input in this matter.
     Thanks in advance.

     Here's the cut'n paste:

     # mt -t /dev/nrmt0h rew
     # vdump -0f /dev/rmt0h /

     (at this point the system did not respond for three minutes I hit the
     return key and replied accordingly.)

     vdump: do you want to retry? y

     (again, at this point the system hung, I hit hit the return key again
     to get the system to respond)

     I figured I try to see if anything actually dumped but, as you can see
     by the response.... I got an error.
