Alpha memory question

Hello,

We use a DEC Alpha OSF1 machine, running 3.2, with 48M of memory as a web/ftp
server.

The top command and vmstat, etc, show cpu usage at 5-8% typically. Memory
looks like it is plenty available most of the time, at least swap space
does, but we suspect that the kernel is only finding 32M of memory. I
have heard a rumor that 3.2 has some bug or other which causes it to miss
memory....being an old Unix-type, I find this very distressing if true.

Anyway, we get a lot of web hits and a lot of ftp traffic, and we are
getting indications of great slowness creeping up on us...before we pull
it offline, replace it with a *PC* (yes, that's what I am saying)...can
anyone help?

It does look to me like the machine does think it only has 32m, anyone
know what we can do, short of pulling this baby offline,

Here is a typical sample of top:

load averages: 0.05, 0.04, 0.01 14:04:43
69 processes: 1 running, 12 sleeping, 55 idle
Cpu states: 0.5% user, 0.0% nice, 6.5% system, 93.0% idle
Memory: Real: 6504K/26M act/tot Virtual: 25M/128M use/tot Free: 656K

PID USERNAME PRI NICE SIZE RES STATE TIME CPU COMMAND
   -- root 44 0 2720K 311K run 0:00 2.50% top
   -- root 44 0 3640K 49K sleep 0:00 0.10% <ftpd>
   -- root 44 0 5664K 1572K sleep 5:31 0.00% named
   -- www 42 0 2352K 466K sleep 1:40 0.00% httpd_1.5b5
   -- www 44 0 2344K 450K sleep 1:36 0.00% httpd_1.5b5

etc etc

Thanks in advance...

Mark
