SUMMARY: Advfs-Patch for V4.0D. When?

From: C.J.Bol <bol_at_Axp1.IenD.wau.nl>
Date: Fri, 13 Mar 1998 11:11:05 +0100

The original question was:

Can anyone on this list (Digital?) tell me when a patch becomes
available for DU4.0D that fixes a bug in the Advfs-code.
Crashes to often with "panic (cpu 0): bs_frag_alloc: invalid_frag ...".
Of course we could go back to a previous version but that cost us a lot
of time again.

I got the following answers (Thanks to all)

The first big patch for 4.0D just came out from DEC Engineering. It
includes the Consolidated AdvFS patches. Call your local DEC tech
     support to get it.

I have been told by Digital it would be available this month -- March.
I was told this in Jan. so there may have been plan changes since
then. It is too late at this point but normally unless it is
absolutely necessary it is not recommended to install an OS as soon as
it is out. This advice is especially true for critical production
systems. Good luck.
ps. did you follow the 2.2.2 Preparing AdvFS File Domains Before
Upgrading
step on page 2-7 of the Digital UNIX Release Notes for Version 4.0D?

I don't know when a patch will be available but one source to watch (if
you don't already) is the Digital Patch mailing list(s). To get on their
mailing lists for the various Digital O/Ss point your favorite browser

The first patch kit for DIGITAL UNIX V4.0D is in testing now, prior to
its
release. I can't give you an exact date, but I suspect it's supposed to
be
available by the end of this month.
Whether the patch kit will fix the specific AdvFS problems you're seeing
is
something to which I would not commit. It's possible you have one or
more
corrupted AdvFS domains, in which case, all bets are off. Have you run
the
AdvFS verify utility over your domains to make sure they're healthy?
What
are the circumstances under which you're seeing the panics? Without
more
information than you've provided (together with investigation of what
set of
known problems are supposed to be fixed in the first patch kit), I could
not
hope to tell you if the problem you are seeing is fixed. Nor could
anyone
else.
