Making tar tapes readable from HPUX

Hello Managers,

How can I write to our TLZ07 tape drive using tar
and have the tapes readable by HPUX? I have tried
this with tar's defaults but the tape was not readable.
I think it has something to do with compression. Is
there a common denominator in tape formats where they
can be used interchangably between OS's?
