I wonder if anyone has had experience using off-the-shelf 3rd party memory
in their DEC Personal Workstation au-series machines? According to the
service guide, it takes "SDRAM JEDEC 21-C conforming, 168-pin with ECC,
83-MHz, 3.3V". This sounds alot like the SDRAM that is used in, e.g.,
Intel TX or LX chipset PC motherboards.
Kingston, among others, offers modules "guaranteed" to work. The best price
that I've found for a 128 MB upgrade is about US$600. However, 2 64MB
"generic" SDRAM modules (w/EEPROM) from reputable mail-order companies goes
for something like $200.
Has anyone had any successes and/or failures using such inexpensive generic
SDRAM in the PWS au-series machines?
