Thanks All.
Thanks to these guys for the insight into identifying terminal types

Martin Mokrejs [mmokrejs_at_mail.natur.cuni.cz]
Ian Mortimer [mortimer_at_physics.uq.edu.au]
Paul A Sand [pas_at_unh.edu]
Avraham (Avi) Y. Shapiro [shapa_at_erols.com]

The best solution for us was to get

`qterm', which is available at ftp://ftp.usc.edu/pub/qterm/qterm.tar.gz
which was suggested by Mr. Sand

This works on both our AIX (4.2 & 4.1.4) and DU 4.0a & 4.0b systems.
This is a slick little c program that send the inqury string to the terminal
receives the answer and compares it to a file full of terminal id strings.

A little manipulation and it does the job.
