Thanks to those people who give me suggestion so rapidly.

my question is:

The answers are:

If you just want to reinstall the system you can use upgrade option.
you can also use installupdate this will rereplace all system s/w.
1) put system in single user mode
2) mount / & /usr mount cdrom of 4.0a on say /cdrom
3) installupdate /cdrom

Anyway if you just boot through CD clean / & /usr
instll the OS other parition are not touched only precaution you have to
take is use advanced option . So you can control the installation.
Now after that if you restore the /etc/fdmns and passwd etc it is ok.

but one more thing if you are allready on C2 make backup of auth
database also alternatively put the system on normal security
backup passwd file then restore passwd file & put back C2 security.

Are users and informix UFS or AdvFS? UFS is easy; don't run
newfs and then edit fstab to reflect where the file systems
are. AdvFS is a little harder, but not much for "simple"
disks. I think V4 has a program called advfsscan or advscan
that can rebuild domains by looking at devices. If not, all
you really have to is create a directory under /etc/fdmns
that is the name of the domain. Then, in it create symbolic
links to the block devices that make up the domain.

Enchanced security may be harder, since I don't think it
uses passwd or group, once setup. I don't use it though
so I don't really know. You may want to go through all
the administrative documentation on it and see if says
how to recover a system.

Some other stuff is pretty easy; restore the original files.
Others may take more setup and running the setup programs
again may be the easiest thing. For applications you need
to see what the product documentation says about restoring
form a system crash. This isn't what you're doing, but it
is pretty close.

Personally, if my applications were up to it, I'd upgrade
to V4.0D.
