Cloning DUNIX System

We have an AlphaServer 1000 4/200 running DUNIX V3.2C and Digital's suite
of X.500 products. It has 320MB of memory, an RZ28 (2.1GB - DKA0) as
root, an RZ28L (2.1GB - DKA100) as /usr, and a TLZ06 (MKA500).

Since this is a production system, and since we have limited DUNIX
experience, we acquired a Digital 3000 Model 600 to serve as a
test/development platform. It has 192MB of memory, an RZ28B (2.1GB
- DKA300), a Seagate 34572N (4.0GB - DKB400) and a TLZ06 (MKA500). We also
have all the required licences.

What I would like to do is to take image backups of the two disks on the
1000 and restore them on the 3000. Then, making allowance for the fact
that the disks are not identical, nor are they on the same SCSI adapters
or have the same IDs, and changing things such as the host name and IP
address, bring up the 3000 as a clone of the 1000.

Once this is done, we would test the upgrade of Unix and the other
products on the 3000, then do the same on the 1000.

Is this an appropriate approach? How should the backups be performed? What
changes have to be made to take into account the changed device ids? Are
there any other gotchas? Any better way to do this?

Any help/information/hints would be appreciated. Thanks.
