We have a collection of webservers and firewalls on our network along
with our business systems. On our business systems we have network
backup software and system monitoring software. However our webservers
and firewalls, due to the paranoid amongst us, don't have any of this
software and consequently are not continuously monitored and are backed
up manually. As our site continues to grow managing these 'standalone'
systems is becoming a man power problem.
We would like to bring the firewalls and webservers into the circle of
managed systems but the naysayers are concerned that by opening up ports
on these 'hardened' systems so that they can communicate with the
management and backup servers, we are inviting tremendous risk to the
whole community.
I have to believe that this is a fairly common situation and would like
to hear what other sites are doing or some advice on the security issues
here.
Thanks
