Name Resolution in web logs

I have a odd question....

What would cause a Digital UNIX machine not to return it FQDM back to a
httpd server?

hostname is set to xxx.cos.com but it only returns xxx in access logs from
httpd.

I'm just a bit confused on this one. None of our other DU machine show
this behavior.
